Cy Lakes Rent Party: Helping Families In Need

Welcome!  We are proud to announce Cy Lakes' first Rent Party!  If you were directed to this page, we look forward to your contribution to make this event successful!
About Our Event
There are many families in need at Cy Lakes this year, and your help is greatly appreciated!  The students of the Harlem Renaissance and African American Literature course are hosting an event that will help these families and pay homage to the optimistic spirit of the Harlem Renaissance.  During the Harlem Renaissance era, many families suffered due to the Great Depression.  And, as you probably already know, Rent Parties were held frequently not only to keep spirits high, but also to help struggling renters raise money to keep from being evicted.  In keeping with tradition, we present the Cy Lakes Rent Party!  The following activities will be held at the event to raise money for families in need:

Art Exhibit: The Harlem Renaissance was a time when art was greatly celebrated and appreciated.  People admired and gathered in anticipation to see the works of artists like Aaron Douglas and Lois Mailou Jones (both of whom our students study in their/our Harlem Renaissance course).  A mini-exhibition is planned for students who show excellence in the Art Department. Students and staff will have the opportunity to bid on fellow Cy Lakes Spartan artwork.  All proceeds will be donated to the families.

Poetry: Poetry was also alive and well during the Harlem Renaissance, and the Cy Lakes Poetry Club will recite poetry at the beginning of the "Rent Party".  Not only is this a great showcase for students, but it will also generate more interest and bring patrons to the event.

Dinner Plates: Staff and parents will donate soul food dishes and desserts specific to the Harlem Renaissance era.  This is yet another way to raise funds by selling full plates and individual food items.  All proceeds will be donated to the families.
